Minecraft Villager Trading Hall Guide
A trading hall turns villagers into a stable source of enchanted books, tools, armor, food, redstone, and emeralds. The safest version is simple: one villager per cell, one workstation per villager, clear access for trading, and enough protection to survive raids and zombies.
Best Early Villagers
- Librarian: enchanted books, bookshelves, name tags, lanterns.
- Fletcher: stick-to-emerald trades for early emerald income.
- Armorer, Toolsmith, Weaponsmith: diamond gear paths after leveling.
- Farmer: crop trades and golden carrots.
Materials
For a starter hall with 8 villagers, prepare building blocks, trapdoors or fences, 8 workstations, torches or lanterns, rails or boats for transport, and a secure door. Beds are useful for breeding, but the trading cells themselves should prioritize workstation access and safety.
Step 1: Build Safe Trading Cells
Give each villager a 1-block-wide cell with a workstation directly in front or beside them. You need to be able to right-click the villager and the villager needs to claim the correct workstation. Add lighting everywhere so hostile mobs cannot spawn inside.
Step 2: Assign Professions
Place one workstation at a time and watch which villager changes profession. If you want a specific trade, do not trade with that villager until you see the offer you want. Once you make a trade, that villager keeps the profession and trade pool.
Step 3: Lock Good Trades
For librarians, cycle the lectern until you see a book worth keeping, then buy or sell once to lock it. High-value books include Mending, Unbreaking, Efficiency, Fortune, Silk Touch, Protection, Sharpness, and Power.
Step 4: Create Emerald Income
Fletchers are the easiest early emerald source because sticks are cheap. Farmers are excellent if you have crop farms. Later, iron farms can support toolsmith, weaponsmith, and armorer trades, depending on your edition and farm design.
Protection Tips
- Keep the hall enclosed and fully lit.
- Do not build the front door where zombies can path directly to villagers.
- Keep villagers away from raid danger unless you know how raids work.
- Use name tags or clear signs to mark important trades.
FAQ
Why did my villager stop restocking?
Villagers need access to their claimed workstation to restock trades. Check that the workstation is not claimed by another villager and that the villager can reach it.
Can I move a locked villager?
Yes, but keep or replace the correct workstation so they can restock after moving.
