Minecraft Water Elevator Guide

A water elevator is one of the easiest ways to move vertically in Minecraft. Soul sand pushes you up, magma blocks pull you down, and kelp helps turn flowing water into source blocks for a working bubble column.

Materials

  • Building blocks or glass for the elevator shaft.
  • Water bucket or enough water to fill the shaft.
  • Kelp to convert water into source blocks.
  • Soul sand for an upward elevator.
  • Magma block for a downward elevator.

Build The Shaft

Create a vertical tube using blocks or glass. A 1x1 shaft works for a compact elevator, but a 2x1 or 2x2 design is easier to enter and decorate. Leave an opening at the bottom and top so you can step in and out safely.

Make The Water Work

Fill the shaft with water, then place kelp from bottom to top. Breaking the kelp afterward helps convert the water column into source blocks. Bubble columns need source blocks to work properly through the full height.

Add Soul Sand Or Magma

Place soul sand at the bottom to create an upward bubble column. Place a magma block at the bottom to create a downward pull. If bubbles do not appear, check that every block of water in the column is a source block.

FAQ

Why is my elevator not bubbling?

The water is probably flowing instead of source blocks. Use kelp through the full shaft, then break it and try again.

Can mobs use water elevators?

Yes, many mobs can be moved with bubble columns, which makes this useful for farms and transport systems.
